Bristol-based theatre company Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory, was established in 2004 with the aim of producing classic plays with large professional casts in an accessible and understandable way.
An important part of their work centred around a programme of workshops that helped young people in South Bristol, particularly those not in education or employment, gain valuable theatre experience.
Post-covid, in the face of rising costs and falling theatre audiences, it became clear that it was no longer viable to continue, and the trustees made the difficult decision to close the theatre company in 2021.
However, the trustees were committed to creating a lasting legacy for the theatre and wanted to find a way to continue to provide opportunities to young actors and theatre creatives in the local community.
Re-vitalising support for young theatre creatives with a charitable trust
Having received support from our grant programmes in the past, the trustees approached our philanthropy team to discuss their ideas for a bursary programme and to get some advice on making this happen.
We were delighted to support them through the process, and we continue to administer the Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory (STF) Bursary Fund ensuring their charitable aims continue to be met.
