The K-Hold, Bristol’s only peer-led support group dedicated to people affected by ketamine use, has received a £5,000 grant from Bristol City Council’s Sparking Social Action in Recovery Grant Programme. The funding will enable them to continue delivering a weekly support group for a further 32 weeks, providing a safe, welcoming space for people at all stages of their recovery journey.
Founded by people with lived experience of ketamine addiction and recovery, The K-Hold was created in response to a significant gap in specialist support. Many people experiencing ketamine-related issues report feeling isolated, misunderstood and unable to find support that recognises the unique challenges associated with ketamine use, including stigma, health complications and a lack of tailored peer networks.
The need for specialist support is growing. Government figures show that an estimated 269,000 people aged 16 to 59 in England and Wales reported using ketamine in the year ending March 2024, while use among 16 to 24-year-olds has increased by 231% since 2013. Concerns about the drug’s impact are increasing nationally, particularly because regular use can lead to serious physical and mental health consequences, including irreversible bladder damage.
“We created The K-Hold because we knew there was a need for support that truly understands the realities of ketamine use and recovery. This funding will help us continue providing a safe, welcoming space where people can connect, access practical support and feel less alone.”
Kelly Storey, Co-Founder, The K-Hold
The weekly group offers a structured programme of activities co-designed with participants. Sessions include lived experience talks, group discussions, creative and mindfulness-based activities, harm reduction workshops and information about other services available across the city. The approach ensures support remains responsive to the needs of those attending.
The funding will help The K-Hold continue working with people who are currently using ketamine, reducing their use or maintaining recovery. By creating a supportive community led by people with lived experience, The K-Hold is helping individuals access support, reduce isolation and take positive steps towards recovery. This grant will ensure this much-needed service remains available across Bristol.
