A long history of generosity
The Redcliffe Parish Charities was set up in 1984 to manage the many donations being made annually to St Mary Redcliffe Parish Church in Bristol, and to consolidate the gifts received previously over hundreds of years. This included gifts in Wills such as stocks, shares, gifted income from farms and other property across Bristol, as well as cash.
A permanent endowment fund was set up by the charity and the earnings from this enabled them to run a successful grants programme which helped fund local organisations providing vital support to parish residents who were facing financial difficulties. Since the mid-80s an estimated £266,000 has been distributed through grants.
Adapting to changing times
In recent years, under the leadership of Graham Briscoe, Redcliffe Parish Charities has faced a number of administrative challenges, such as adopting new technology to improve their processes, and recruiting new Trustees to run the charity.
In response to this, Graham and his team of trustees, started to look for a better way to administer the charity, and contacted Quartet to discuss the options. Philanthropy Manager, Angela Emms, worked closely with the charity to discuss their aims and deliver a solution which would ensure the long -term legacy of the charity.
“Running a charity can be a complicated landscape to navigate, especially for small charities with limited time and resources. This was the situation Redcliffe Parish Charities found itself facing in 2024.
Charitable trust transfers are an effective way for trustees to reduce the administrative burden of running a charity, whilst ensuring that the important work they do, and the legacy they leave, is not lost.” Angela Emms, Philanthropy Manager, Quartet
In September 2024, the Redcliffe Parish Charities’ permanent endowment fund was transferred to Quartet and the Redcliffe Parish Fund was established, with a value of £200,000 to continue making grants to relieve hardship for organisations working with the residents of the parish of St Mary Redcliffe and Temple.
